Library Survey for Parents

Dear Parents,

Plymouth Docent, Trip and Colonial Day

Our fourth graders have sailed from England on the Mayflower and have arrived at Plymouth Rock.  To enhance their study of Colonial America, a colonial program is presented on May 3rd by a museum teacher who is dressed and speaks as if he is a 17th century colonist.  He will bring children's clothing and artifacts to illustrate his presentation. On May 17th, our fourth graders go to Plymouth, MA to learn about the colonial way of life and how the lack of specialization forced early settlers to spend most of their time securing necessities for survival. They will visit Plimoth Plantation, a grist mill, go on a historical walk and visit a museum.  With all that they have learned, they will transform Korn's gym into Colonial America on May 21st.

Ecosystem & Erosion Walks

Marcy Klattenberg will take the third graders to Allyn Brook to study the stream and a stream's ecosystem.  They will observe how the force of water affects the stream bed and surrounding area.  They will also study what lives and grows around the stream.  They will then go back to their classes and perform experiments on erosion and write in their science journals what they observe.

Transportation Cuts by the State of Connecticut

April 22, 2013

Dear Parents,

Please see the letter from Susan Viccaro regarding the state of the transportation money in our current budget. It is imperative that you contact our legislators to let them know that not reinstating this money could have a detrimental effect on our children. Contact information is listed in the letter. Your participation in this effort is critical. Thank you.

Dear Community Members and School Staff,

The Governor's proposed budget eliminated transportation funding that amounted to a loss of $282,000 for Regional School District 13. The Appropriations Committee also proposed the elimination of transportation funding. Student transportation is fundamental to the educational process and is mandated to be made available to all students. Transportation accounts for 5% of the total school budget and the elimination of the grant is a significant financial loss to the district. It is imperative that you contact your legislators (listed below) and let them know that you want the transportation grant restored. We thank you for your efforts.

GO Far

Go Far is Starting Again!

Go Far is a non-competitive daily fitness and wellness program that encourages healthy exercise. Children benefit and learn about the importance of achieving a long term goal through our structured program.  During recess, students run or walk laps and have their mileage recorded by a mentoring adult. Students are given small prizes every five miles and a t-shirt at 26.2 miles. Positive peer and community recognition is essential to the program and given to the students throughout their journey to wellness.

Now that the winter thaw has cleared our path, we are starting Go Far again this week.  We have changed the prizes this spring.  Kids can earn Legos on a necklace and/or add stamps to their passports.  We have found that this helps keep the kids engaged, motivated and enthusiastic about Go Far.

We would like you to encourage your child in this endeavor.  To do this, we need you to do two things consistently:

  1. Please make sure he/she is wearing sneakers and his/her charm necklace on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  2. Send in an extra water bottle in your child's lunchbox for pre- and post-hydration.

We would like to run the program as many days as possible so that as many children as possible can get their marathons.  To do that, we need help.  We are in desperate need of volunteers.  The program runs from 12:15 -1:15.

We will culminate the program this year with the Go Far Go Fast road race at the Durham Fairgrounds on June 1.  More information and registration will come shortly.  If you can volunteer on Race Day, or assist in planning and setting up ahead of time, please let us know.

If you have questions or would like to volunteer to help out, please contact Kim Salley at markims@sbcglobal.net.
